Alberta Minute: Fire, Supply Bills, Carbon Taxes, And Calgary Taxes
Alberta Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Alberta politics.

This Week In Alberta:
- Wildfires continue to ravage Northern Alberta but, thankfully, thousands of evacuees from the High Level area will be able to return home on Monday. Firefighters have been successful in building fire breaks and conducting controlled burns to protect the communities threatened by the Chuckegg Creek fire since the evacuation order was made.
-
In the Legislature, four new pieces of government legislation are expected to be introduced - Bill 5 (Supplementary Supply), Bill 6 (Interim Supply), Bill 7 (Municipal Government Property Tax Incentives), and Bill 8 (Education Amendment).
- Bill 1 (Carbon Tax) is expected to complete third reading, while Bills 2, 3, and 4 will continue on their second readings. Debate will also continue on the Address in Reply to the Speech From the Throne.
Last Week In Alberta:
- Bill 1, An Act to Repeal the Carbon Tax made its way through the legislature, and reached third reading. The province removed the consumer portion of the carbon tax from gasoline at the pumps and on home heating fuels just after midnight Thursday morning, regardless.
- Bill 2 (An Act to Make Alberta Open for Business), Bill 3 (the "Job Creation Tax Cut"), and Bill 4 (the "Red Tape Reduction Act") were all introduced, with Bill 3, which introduces a youth wage, changing overtime rules, and restoring a mandatory secret ballot for all union certification votes, generating the most debate in the media.
- The Province was asked to bail out the City of Calgary after nearly a decade of gross financial mismanagement came to a head in the form of massive tax hikes on Calgary area businesses. Alberta's new Municipal Affairs Minister refused the city's request, telling the city it was time to get their own financial house in order.
