Alberta Minute: Remembrance Day, a Fair Deal, and Government Intervention
Alberta Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Alberta politics.

This Week In Alberta:
- Today is Remembrance Day. A large number of public ceremonies will be happening in Calgary, Edmonton, and across the rest of the province.
- After Remembrance Day on Monday, the rest of this week is a constituency week for the Legislature. During constituency weeks the Legislature is adjourned and there are no committee meetings. Instead, MLAs work on local issues affecting their ridings.
- The Legislature and Committees will return next week, to continue debate on the budget and several other bills including the government's new carbon tax law: Bill 19 (Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction Implementation Act, 2019).
Last Week In Alberta:
- Premier Kenney announced the members and mandate for the "Fair Deal" panel on Saturday. The panel will look at 9 specific ways the government can advance the interests of Alberta, including provincial collection of taxes, the creation of an Alberta Pension Plan and police force, seeking a tax point swap for transfers, and more - all ideas proposed in our Project Confederation open letter.
- The government also lifted the oil curtailment cap for newly drilled conventional oil wells to help retain jobs in Alberta. Of course, we'd prefer the government to stay out of managing supply entirely, but this is a good step towards returning to a free market
- Meanwhile, another government intervention into the free market continues to be as disastrous as you'd expect with the Sturgeon Refinery facing yet another delay. How many billions of taxpayer dollars need to be wasted on corporate welfare before the government will accept that it isn't any good at the business of business.
