Done Getting Screwed
Recently, Peter McCaffrey, president of the Alberta Institute, delivered a speech at the Rebel News Done Getting Screwed events held in Edmonton and Calgary.
These emergency town halls brought together concerned Albertans to discuss whether or not Albertans will choose to remain part of Canada or look to separate.
During his address, Peter highlighted the rising tide of support for Alberta’s independence.
Recent polls indicate that separatist sentiment has increased from 25% to 36%, a significant jump in a short period.
Still, he emphasized that independence would need the backing of a majority (or even a supermajority) of Albertans, and while 36% is an historically level of support, it’s still a long way away from 50% or 60%.
That means issues like constitutional reform, abolishing equalization, adopting an Alberta Pension Plan, and more, can’t be forgotten.
Peter also challenged the simplistic notion that current alienation is merely a knee-jerk reaction to recent election results.
Instead, he explained that this growing movement reflects a deeper frustration with Canada’s broken political and economic systems.
Key issues like equalization payments, which many Canadians misunderstand, fuel Alberta’s sense of unfair treatment and alienation from federal policies that impact the province’s prosperity.
