The vulnerable have received both doses, almost every Albertan who wants one has received a first dose, and cases and hospitalizations have plummeted.

Now, backed by evidence-based scientific and medical advice, the provincial government have announced that Alberta will be opening for summer and opening for good come July 1st.

Except, many Councillors and local officials are ignoring this expert advice and are, instead, substituting their own personal opinions and hunches.

In Calgary, Edmonton, and Lethbridge (and likely more centres in the coming week) these science-denying Councillors have voted to delay the removal of municipal restrictions until at least early July, and many are pushing to keep restrictions for even longer.

Premier Kenney has said that this is "not helpful", and "counterproductive".

But that's not good enough, and Mayor Nenshi, Mayor Iveson, Mayor Spearmen, and others aren't listening.

The reality is, some politicians have enjoyed the additional powers they have had during this pandemic, and they aren't ready to give up those powers yet.

There is a solution, however.

In the United States, when power-hungry local officials tried to cling to their restrictions, Governors like Ron DeSantis in Florida, Greg Abbott in Texas, and others in Iowa, Georgia, South Carolina, and more, stepped up and passed state-wide rules that nullified these local rules.

It's time for Premier Kenney and the Alberta government to do the same.

It's time for Premier Kenney to stand up to Calgary Council, Edmonton Council, Lethbridge Council and any other Council that drags its feet.

It's time for Premier Kenney to stand up for Albertans and ensure that his promise of opening for summer and opening for good on July 1st actually happens for all Albertans.

It's time for Premier Kenney to override any cities that refuse to follow the science, and nullify any municipal COVID restrictions that conflict with the Province's rules come July 1st, 2021.
