Yet today, unnecessary trade barriers - many within our own borders - are holding us back, driving up costs, and preventing Canadians from reaching their full potential.
Alberta’s vast energy resources should be fueling prosperity across the country and beyond, yet outdated interprovincial restrictions block the movement of oil, gas, and electricity.
Protectionist policies in industries like telecom, dairy, and air travel keep costs high and limit choices for consumers, all while shielding large corporations from competition.
Now, threats to free trade are growing.
President Donald Trump has threatened sweeping tariffs, and Ottawa has signalled it will retaliate with tariffs of its own, continuing the cycle of economic isolation that ultimately harms consumers and businesses on both sides of the border.
Instead of responding with more protectionism, Canada should be doubling down on free trade by tearing down internal barriers and opening new markets abroad.
We cannot rely on a single trade partner or wait for the next round of tariffs to disrupt our economy.
A more competitive, outward-looking Canada would give businesses the freedom to grow and reduce our vulnerability to political uncertainty.
